When I was in 3rd grade I entered a competition to design the logo for my elementary school. We were the Crestview Cougars! Remarkably, my entry won and my design was the school logo for the next decade or so. When they announced over the intercom that I had won; my classmates picked me up and held me in the air while they cheered.... It's hard to forget a moment like that.
I think I was in 8th grade when I took on my first design commision. It was a logo for a real estate broker. She was pleased with the design, but a few months after I gave her the artwork she contancted me and was a bit frustrated. A different real estate company was using the same logo and she thought I had sold it to them as well. I told her I had not. Some other real estate agent had actually stolen the logo!
I am fascinated by the design process. In fact I don't see a difference between oil painting, filmmaking and graphic design. I would never want to do graphic design as a full time job, but I love taking on occasional projects.
Most of design jobs I take on relate to arts & culture. I especially love the creative freedom in designing gig posters and album art.
